The History of Student Government Association at UNCG

The 92-year old Student Government Association had its start as the Students' Council, organized in 1910. In 1914, the current Student Government Association was founded as the Student Self-Government Association with the word "Self" later being dropped from the name of the organization. The Student Self-Government Association was approved by the University Board of Directors in 1915.

The Student Senate was created in 1922 and is now in its eighty-fourth legislative session. In the 2004-2005 academic year, the Constitution of the Student Government Association was revised and a bi-cameral legislature was set up. The Constitution was approved by the Student Body in November 2005 and the House of Representatives began operation.

The Student Government Association joined the Student Council of the Consolidated University of North Carolina in 1949 and in 1950 joined the National Student Association.

In its 92-year history the Student Government Association has had 91 Presidents. Dara Edelman (Class of 2005) is the only President to serve two terms. The first African-American President of the Student Government Association was Ralph Wilkerson; President Wilkerson served during the 1978-79 academic year.

Below is a list of our Presidents, from the first in 1914 to the most current:
